Destination Imagination is a volunteer-run non-profit that has been running creative problem solving competitions for kids grades K-college since 1982. Each year, over 150,000 students in over 30 countries participate in DI.
DI presents students with 7 challenges each year (engineering, technology, scientific, fine arts, community service, improv, and early learning (grades K-2)). Students work on teams of 2-7 kids. Each team selects one challenge to work on. Teams present their solution at a regional tournament (Feb/Mar). At the tournament, students also participate in an Instant Challenge (IC) where students have approx 5-8 min to solve a small challenge. The teams with the top combined scores advance to the State tournament (April), and again top teams advance to the global tournament (May) at the University of Tennessee.
The thing that makes DI so unique is that everything (and I mean absolutely everything) has to be done by the kids without adult interference. All ideas and creations have to be entirely student created, designed, led, and executed.
